Despite how much fun the warning label makes it look (it looks like they are having some kind of stick-figure pool party in there!) I’ve never been tempted to play on or around a dumpster. Kids in my neighborhood can’t say the same thing.
I can’t help but wonder if these kids read those signs that say and think to themselves: “Mmmm… Dumpster… Forbidden playground!”. Maybe they can’t read - and think that this actually is our playground. Or maybe they don’t think at all.
One afternoon when I came home from school and saw these kids frolicking on the dumpster. Although I’ve never seen it myself - I’ve actually heard that kids sometimes play in the dumpster.
Look at these images:

Taking a leap of faith

Umfh… Mandatory point deduction for poor landing

Very soon after this picture was taken, a boy became a man…
Who was the first kid to think of this? Do kids in other areas do this? Why don’t the parents do something about it? Why did some idiot just sit there and take pictures instead of going and telling the kids to stop?

I don’t know any dumpster divers myself, but I have seen kids playing on top of the dumpsters, never actually inside though.
Interesting blog…see you around.

Yay for the return of Ryan’s camera! It made your blog so much fun! You’ve got to be careful what you take pictures of, though, or your neighbors will start to think you’re a pedaphile. I can’t say that kids in Minnesota play on dumpsters like that, but then again, our elementary students generally score among the top of the nation in test scores. I’m not sure where Utah ranks . . . Judging by the geniuses on the “portable playground”, I’d say just above Louisiana.

I was a long way away when I took the photo. Thanks to the miracle of 5 megapixels, I was able to crop in the photo to make it look like I was closer. Even so - who would think a man in a van with paint peeling off of it taking prolonged gazes at children could have anything but altruistic motives?
You imply a correlation between dumpster-related activity and low test scores. This may be valid. Although kids here play on, and sometimes in dumpsters - Utah ranks in the middle of test scores. I think Louisiana ranks among the lowest. There, they live in dumpsters. So you would have to find the right way to quantify it - but you may be on to something.
Oh, I’ve also realized there is a strong correlation between living in Minnesota and thinking your poop dont stink! :p
